What Actually Happens on the Free Call

2 min read
A riveted notice board fills the window of a coastal watch-station, headed "What happens on the free call", listing what gets talked about and what does not. A plain mug and a closed notebook sit on the desk below, beside an empty chair turned toward the board.

A free first call is not a favor, and I would rather not dress it up as one. It is how most trades already work. Someone comes out to look at the roof, tells you what it needs, and leaves you to decide. Nobody calls that generous. It is the estimate.

Coaching works the same way here. Thirty minutes, online, no card, no commitment. The point is not to move you onto a tier. The point is to find out whether there is anything worth coaching in the first place, and to say so either way.

Since nobody ever tells you what is in one of these calls before you book it, here is the whole agenda.

I ask how you actually work now

Not what software you own. What your week looks like. Which parts of it repeat, which parts you dread, and where the paperwork piles up until a day off disappears into it.

This is the part that matters most, and it is the part that gets skipped when a call turns into a demo. A tool that impresses you in a demo and does not fit your Tuesday is worse than no tool, because now you are maintaining it.

I listen for the repetitive stretch

Almost every working week has one. The same message typed out for the fortieth time. The same spreadsheet rebuilt every month. The same three questions from every new customer.

That stretch is where AI earns its place, and it is specific to you, which is why the call is a conversation rather than a script. I would rather find one real repetition than list twenty features.

I tell you what I think, including the unwelcome version

If what you need is a better template, a phone call to your accountant, or an afternoon with the settings you already have, that is what I will say. There is no version of this where I pretend a thirty-minute conversation revealed a deep need for a coach.

That is not modesty. Coaching somebody who does not want it is a bad use of both our time, and I would rather lose the booking than spend six weeks proving that.

What does not happen

No slides. No pitch deck. No price that drops if you decide today. No follow-up sequence designed to wear you down, because I do not have one and do not intend to build one.

If we agree it is a fit, the next step is a single session — not a plan, not a commitment. You can read what those sessions actually cover on the Services page, and the full five-step version is here.

What you leave with

Either a clear next step, or a clear no. Both are useful, and only one of them costs anything after the call ends.

If you keep going, the shape of the work is the same one I use on my own projects, which I wrote about in How I Work. And once you have been at it a while, twelve hours of paid coaching sends a free session to a nonprofit you pick, which I wrote about in The Giveback.

To book one, text 503-664-0546. Email eog@ernestofgaia.xyz if that is easier. Tell me roughly what your week looks like and we will find thirty minutes.
